Sant Harnam Singh Ji was born on 14 January 1917 to father Mehtab Singh and mother Maya Kaur in the city of Okhara, District Montgomery (now in Pakistan).
At the age of two, his father passed away, and at the age of seven, his mother also departed for their heavenly abode. He was thereafter raised by his maternal family.
At the age of five, he had the blessed darshan of Baba Nand Singh Ji. Deeply inspired by his extraordinary spiritual personality, a profound transformation took place in his life.
He passed his matriculation examination in First Division. For a short period, he worked as a Patwari, but later renounced the job and devoted himself entirely to meditation and devotion. Under the guidance of Baba Nand Singh Ji, he learned the method of Naam Simran and performed spiritual disciplines (Chalises). He recited one and a quarter lakh (125,000) repetitions of the Mool Mantar and Gurmantra. During the second period of devotion, he completed one and a quarter lakh recitations of Japji Sahib.
After the Partition of 1947, Baba Ji stayed for five years in Loharka (District Amritsar). He continued preaching Gurmat in villages such as Nag Kalan, Nawan Nag, Gumtala, Khasa, Chheharta, and other surrounding areas.
Later, he settled in Dhogri (District Jalandhar), where he performed three spiritual disciplines. Thereafter, he traveled to Singhpur, Parjian, Jalalabad, Fazilka, Abohar, Sirsa, Jagraon, Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Zira, and many other places, uplifting the sangat through spiritual teachings.
On 20 May 1984, he permanently settled at the newly built residence of S. Kuldeep Singh and Bibi Harbhajan Kaur in Zira, which was known as “Guru Nanak Niwas.”
On 18 March 1985, land was purchased in Zira for the construction of a new Gurdwara Sahib. On 14 January 1986, Baba Ji, along with the Panj Pyare, laid the foundation stone of the site, and the boundary wall was constructed.
On 13 November 1989 (Monday), on the auspicious occasion of the Parkash Purab of Sri Guru Nanak Sahib Ji, after the completion of the Akhand Path Sahib and kirtan-katha, at 1:39 PM, as the congregation called out “Fateh,” Baba Ji also departed for his heavenly abode.
On 15 November 1989, his final rites were performed at the same place at 1:39 PM.
On 22 November 1989, the final Ardas was performed. The responsibility of continued seva was entrusted to Sant Hari Singh Ji by the saints and the congregation.
On 13 December, thousands of devotees departed from Zira in buses, trucks, and cars in a convoy. After offering Ardas at Patalpuri Sahib and staying overnight at Anandpur Sahib, they reached Sri Bhabbhor Sahib on 14 December 1989, where the ashes were immersed in the Sutlej River. During the immersion ceremony, five ceremonial gun salutes were offered as a mark of respect.
